The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving tax collection through fairness, professionalism and transparency, saying the approach is central to increasing voluntary tax compliance and strengthening public trust in the tax system.

Speaking during a performance review meeting for the 2025/26 financial year, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda said the authority will continue implementing directives issued by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has consistently emphasized the importance of voluntary compliance and a fair tax environment that supports economic growth.

Mwenda said the meeting also focused on strategies to implement the President’s guidance delivered during the commemoration of TRA’s 30 years of service and the Presidential Awards ceremony held on July 1.

He stressed that TRA will treat all taxpayers with respect while ensuring that tax laws are enforced firmly and professionally, particularly against those who deliberately evade taxes.

“There will be no oppressive taxation,” Mwenda said, noting that fairness must apply on both sides taxpayers must pay what is due, and the authority must ensure assessments are accurate and just.

He added that building voluntary compliance depends on strengthening trust between TRA and taxpayers through fair administration, improved service delivery and responsible use of public revenues.

According to Mwenda, enhancing taxpayer experience is also key to supporting businesses, reducing compliance challenges and making it easier for citizens to meet their obligations without unnecessary burden.

He said the partnership between TRA and taxpayers has been a major driver of revenue growth over the past 30 years, reflecting improved systems, reforms and increased awareness.

Mwenda noted that annual tax collection has risen significantly from about Sh21 trillion when President Samia took office to Sh37.96 trillion, an increase of more than 77 percent, demonstrating stronger compliance and improved economic activity.

He emphasized that sustaining this progress requires continued reforms that promote fairness, accountability and efficiency in tax administration, ensuring that the tax system supports national development while protecting taxpayers’ rights.
