Tanzania’s national judo team is set to begin its quest for medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with Ibrahim Mohammad Khamis leading the country’s charge in the men’s 60kg category.
Khamis will step onto the tatami tomorrow as he battles for a place among the top performers in a highly competitive field featuring some of the Commonwealth’s finest judokas.
His teammate Andrew Thomas Mlugu will join the campaign on August 1, competing in the men’s 81kg category, with the goal of advancing to the later stages of the competition and keeping Tanzania’s medal hopes alive.
National Judo Team Head Coach Omary Yusuph Mgowe said the athletes are fully prepared and confident ahead of their opening bouts after undergoing a comprehensive training programme in Tanzania.
Mgowe said the focus now is on translating the skills, discipline and tactics developed during training into strong performances on the international stage.
“We have completed our preparations in Tanzania and the athletes are ready for the competition. We believe they will fight hard and represent Tanzania with determination,” Mgowe said.
The Tanzanian delegation arrived safely in Glasgow, consisting of the two judokas — Khamis and Mlugu alongside coach Mgowe, who will oversee the team’s performance throughout the competition.
The judo events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 31 to August 2, with Tanzania’s athletes aiming to make history by securing medals and enhancing the country’s growing presence in international sporting competitions.
The nation’s sports fans are expected to rally behind the judokas as they strive to deliver impressive results and fly the Tanzanian flag high on the global stage.
