Tanzania’s Faru Weusi boxing team representative, Zawadi Kutaka, has bowed out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games after suffering a quarter-final defeat to Lesotho’s Rapelang Maselela in a closely contested bout decided by a split judges’ decision (4-1).
Zawadi made a slow start, losing the opening round 4-1 on points. However, the Tanzanian boxer responded strongly in the second round, dominating the exchanges to secure a unanimous 5-0 score from the judges and revive hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
In the final round, Zawadi came out aggressively and appeared to be in control as he pushed for victory. However, his momentum was disrupted after Maselela landed a powerful right-hand punch that forced a count and shifted the direction of the contest.
The setback proved decisive, with the Lesotho boxer earning the judges’ favour and ending Zawadi’s campaign at the quarter-final stage.
Despite the elimination, Zawadi delivered a commendable performance, displaying determination, confidence and fighting spirit while representing Tanzania on the international stage.
The Commonwealth Games boxing competition continues with the semi-finals scheduled for tomorrow, while the gold medal bouts are expected to take place on Saturday.
