Tanzania has launched a preliminary study to guide the development of a major blue economy project expected to boost sustainable use of marine resources while creating inclusive economic opportunities for coastal communities.
The study marks the first step in preparing the project proposal, titled "Leading an Ecological and Inclusive Ocean-Based Economic Growth in the United Republic of Tanzania," which is expected to receive joint financing from the European Union (EU) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
The launch meeting, chaired by Permanent Secretary Prof. Mohamed Sheikh on July 28, brought together government institutions, development partners and technical experts to discuss the study's implementation, define stakeholders' responsibilities and gather input for the project design.
Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Sheikh stressed that close coordination among all participating institutions would be critical to ensuring the study delivers practical recommendations capable of supporting long-term growth in Tanzania's blue economy.
He said the initiative should strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection by promoting the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources while expanding opportunities for Tanzanians who depend on the ocean for their livelihoods.
The meeting was attended by representatives from AFD, the European Union Delegation to Tanzania, consultancy firm BRLi, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, and the Vice President's Office.
Once developed, the project is expected to support ecological conservation, sustainable fisheries and other ocean-based economic activities, while encouraging inclusive growth and strengthening the resilience of Tanzania's coastal and marine ecosystems.
