Tanzania integrates customs and weights systems to streamline Cargo clearance

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania has taken another step towards improving trade facilitation after the Tanzania Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) announced the integration of its Management Information System (WMA-MIS) with the Tanzania Customs Integrated System (TANCIS), operated by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

The integration is expected to enhance efficiency in the clearance of imported pre-packaged goods at border posts, seaports and airports by enabling the two government systems to share information seamlessly.

According to WMA, the move is aimed at simplifying the agency's regulatory functions during cargo clearance while reducing delays that may arise during the verification of imported packaged products.

The agency said the integrated platform will officially come into operation on July 9, 2026, when WMA begins accessing information on imported pre-packaged goods directly through the TANCIS system.

This will enable inspectors to verify consignments more quickly and improve service delivery at points of entry.

WMA has called on importers, clearing and forwarding agents and other stakeholders involved in cargo clearance to ensure that all information submitted through the system is accurate and complete.

The agency noted that proper use of the integrated platform will help prevent unnecessary disruptions and delays in the release of consignments.

The system integration is also expected to strengthen collaboration between WMA and TRA by eliminating duplication of processes and improving coordination in the management of imported goods.

Trade stakeholders are expected to benefit from faster clearance procedures, greater transparency and improved regulatory compliance, contributing to a more efficient business environment.

WMA reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely and reliable services and said it is fully prepared to support importers and other stakeholders during the transition to the integrated system to ensure smooth implementation.
