The government has allocated TZS 22.06 billion in the 2026/2027 financial year to expand the use of cleaner energy through the construction of mobile compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, in a move aimed at improving access to natural gas in areas not connected to existing pipeline infrastructure.
The project will be implemented by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) as part of the government’s broader strategy to promote affordable and environmentally friendly energy solutions across the country.
Speaking at the ongoing 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba) in Dar es Salaam, TPDC Engineer Gleam Ulungi said the initiative is designed to bring natural gas closer to consumers, especially in regions that are far from established distribution networks.
He said the plan will rely on specially designed CNG trucks to transport compressed natural gas from major supply points, including mother stations in Dar es Salaam, to mobile stations that will be deployed in various regions across the country.
According to him, TPDC will construct five mobile CNG stations in the first phase of implementation. Two stations will be located in Dar es Salaam, one in Morogoro, and two in Dodoma.
Ulungi explained that the mobile stations will significantly improve energy access, particularly for transport operators and industries shifting from conventional fuels to cleaner and more efficient alternatives.
He added that the government, through TPDC, is also identifying suitable sites and conducting environmental and social impact assessments in Tanga, Kilimanjaro, and Arusha regions, where further expansion is planned.
Each of these three regions is expected to host two additional CNG stations, strengthening the national natural gas distribution network.
The initiative is part of Tanzania’s wider agenda to expand the use of natural gas in transport and industrial sectors, reduce dependence on imported petroleum fuels, and support the transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources that contribute to economic growth and environmental protection.
