President Samia Suluhu Hassan has challenged the newly sworn-in Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Grace Magembe, to ensure the effective implementation of the sector's policies, budget and reforms, with a strong emphasis on improving healthcare services for Tanzanians.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at State House in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, President Samia said Dr Magembe's extensive experience in public service made her well suited to oversee one of the country's most important ministries.

The President noted that Dr Magembe assumes office shortly after Parliament approved the 2026/27 health budget, making efficient implementation of government programmes her immediate priority.

"You are taking over the implementation of a budget that has already been approved by Parliament. Ensure every shilling is spent with integrity and delivers the intended results for the people," President Samia said.

She directed the new Permanent Secretary to strengthen the availability of medicines, medical supplies and essential equipment in hospitals, health centres and dispensaries across the country, saying citizens expect to benefit from the government's continued investment in the health sector.

"The public expects medicines to be available, medical equipment to be accessible and healthcare services to improve. These are priorities that require close supervision," she said.

President Samia also emphasised the importance of good leadership within the ministry, urging Dr Magembe to foster teamwork, maintain open communication with staff and lead fairly.

"The ministry's success depends on teamwork. Listen to your staff, involve them in decision-making and provide fair leadership," she said.

The Head of State assured Dr Magembe of the government's support, saying she would receive the guidance needed to ensure the ministry delivers on its mandate.

Dr Magembe brings decades of experience in Tanzania's public health sector, having previously served as Chief Medical Officer, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and in senior leadership at the Prime Minister's Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government.

Her appointment comes as the government seeks to accelerate the implementation of health sector reforms, improve access to medicines and medical equipment, and enhance the quality of healthcare services nationwide.
