ZANZIBAR. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has described political reconciliation as a sign of maturity rather than weakness, saying it lays a strong foundation for national unity, mutual respect and peaceful governance.
Speaking on Thursday during the signing of the Joint Declaration on Political Reconciliation in Zanzibar, President Samia said leaders can hold differing political views while still finding common ground on issues that serve the interests and wellbeing of citizens and the nation.
She said reconciliation demonstrates that political competition should not undermine cooperation on matters of national importance, adding that such an approach strengthens democratic governance and social cohesion.
"The path we are taking opens a new chapter in strengthening unity, peace, stability and solidarity among the people of Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole," President Samia said.
She called for sustained efforts to preserve and advance the reconciliation process, noting that political civility requires leaders to compete through wisdom and constructive ideas rather than confrontational rhetoric.
"I describe this as a noble undertaking because true statesmanship teaches us to engage in politics with wisdom, not by raising our voices without reason," she said.
The signing of the Joint Declaration is expected to reinforce ongoing efforts to foster dialogue and political consensus in Zanzibar, with the government expressing optimism that the initiative will contribute to lasting peace, stability and inclusive development across the country.
