PM courts alstom for Tanzania's urban transport modernisation

Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has invited French transport engineering giant Alstom to invest in Tanzania's urban transport sector as the government seeks international partnerships to address congestion in major cities and improve public transport infrastructure.

During talks with Alstom Vice President Philippe Deller, Dr Nchemba said Tanzania was implementing reforms to improve the investment climate and position itself as a regional hub for trade, transport and logistics in East Africa.

He said the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan remained committed to creating a predictable business environment capable of attracting global investors into strategic infrastructure projects.

The discussions centred on opportunities for Alstom to participate in the development of modern urban transport systems, including rapid transit infrastructure aimed at easing traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam, where growing vehicle numbers continue to strain existing road networks.

Deller said the company was keen to partner with the Tanzanian government in delivering strategic transport projects and was also assessing opportunities in Mwanza, Mbeya and Arusha as urbanisation accelerates across the country.

If implemented, the projects would introduce modern mass transit systems designed to reduce travel times, improve connectivity and support economic activity in Tanzania's expanding cities.

The meeting reflects the government's strategy of leveraging foreign investment and technical expertise to accelerate infrastructure development while supporting sustainable urban growth.

Alstom is among the world's leading providers of public transport solutions, specialising in the design, construction and operation of high-speed rail, metro, tram and integrated transport management systems.

The company has delivered major rail and urban mobility projects across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, making it one of the global players Tanzania hopes to attract as it modernises its transport network.
