Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has commended the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for its remarkable progress over the past three decades, saying its improved revenue collection has played a critical role in financing Tanzania's development agenda.

Speaking during the President's Taxpayer of the Year Awards and the commemoration of TRA's 30th anniversary at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam on July 1, 2026, Dr Mwinyi praised the tax authority for strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation and enhancing tax administration.

The event was officiated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who also recognised outstanding taxpayers and institutions for their contribution to the country's economic growth.

Dr Mwinyi said TRA's success reflects sustained reforms and the commitment of its leadership and staff, whose efforts have helped expand the government's fiscal capacity to fund key sectors, including infrastructure, health, education and other public services.

He urged the authority to intensify taxpayer education to encourage voluntary compliance, broaden the tax base and continue creating a business-friendly environment that supports both revenue growth and private sector development.

"Building a strong tax culture requires continuous public awareness and efficient service delivery," he said, noting that voluntary tax compliance remains essential for sustaining the country's development ambitions.

The Zanzibar leader also congratulated individuals and companies honoured with the President's Taxpayer of the Year Awards, describing compliant taxpayers as indispensable partners in national development.

He reaffirmed the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar's commitment to working closely with TRA to strengthen domestic revenue collection and improve the country's capacity to finance development through locally generated resources.

During the ceremony, Dr Mwinyi presented awards to several companies recognised for excellence in tax compliance and customs performance.

The winners included Watu Credit Tanzania Limited, Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, Puma Energy Tanzania Limited, Bakhresa Food Products Limited, Marinair Freights Limited, Toyota Tanzania Limited, Mount Meru Petroleum Limited, and DP World.

The awards formed part of TRA's 30th anniversary celebrations, marking three decades since the authority was established to modernise tax administration, improve compliance and increase domestic revenue mobilisation, which has become an increasingly important pillar of Tanzania's economic development and fiscal sustainability.
