Government steps up pace in implementation of development projects nationwide

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has intensified efforts to accelerate the implementation of development projects across all regions, with special emphasis on improving road infrastructure to strengthen service delivery and stimulate economic growth at district and regional levels.

Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba said the government is committed to ensuring that all planned development projects are implemented efficiently, particularly those that enhance connectivity and improve access to social and economic services for citizens.

Speaking during a public rally in Butiama District, Mara Region, Dr. Nchemba said the government has already proven its capacity to implement major flagship projects using domestic resources.

He cited key national infrastructure projects such as the Kigongo–Busisi Bridge as clear evidence of successful execution of strategic investments financed through internal revenue.

He added that the government is now focusing on accelerating infrastructure development at regional and district levels to ensure that citizens directly benefit from improved roads, better access to markets, and more efficient movement of goods and services.

Dr. Nchemba directed that the design and implementation of the 37-kilometre Kitaramanka–Magunga–Busegwe road in Mara Region should begin immediately.

He said the project is expected to open up local economic opportunities, especially in agriculture and tourism, which are key sectors for the region’s development.

He also instructed that all road projects in Mara Region be coordinated under a clear implementation framework to speed up completion and improve efficiency.

He emphasized that development must be felt at the grassroots level through better infrastructure that supports daily life and economic activities.

On ongoing projects, Deputy Minister for Works Engineer Godfrey Kasekenya said the government has allocated funds in the 2026/2027 financial year to continue implementing infrastructure projects across the country, including those in Mara Region.

He said construction of the Makutano–Butiama road, which stretches about 50 kilometres, has been completed, marking a major improvement in internal connectivity within Butiama District.

He further noted that progress continues on the Makutano–Butiama–Nyamuswa–Fort Ikoma–Ngorongoro Gate route, particularly the Sanzate–Nata section, which is 40 kilometres long and is now 67 percent complete.

Engineer Kasekenya said the government has given special priority to road development in Butiama due to its historical importance as the birthplace of Tanzania’s founding father, Julius Nyerere

He said improving infrastructure in the area is both a development priority and a way of honoring national heritage.

He also directed the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to ensure that all paved roads in towns and district centres across Mara Region are fitted with street lights.

He said the move will improve road safety, support businesses that operate at night, enhance urban appearance, and increase security for residents.

The government’s renewed focus on infrastructure development is part of a broader national drive to reduce regional development gaps, improve transport systems, and strengthen economic opportunities for citizens across the country.

Once completed, the ongoing projects are expected to improve access to markets, schools, and health facilities, while boosting agriculture, trade, and tourism activities in Mara Region and beyond, ultimately improving the livelihoods of citizens.
