The government has allocated Sh1.25 billion to improve healthcare services at Mahenge District Hospital in Ulanga District, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure across the country.

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, announced the funding during a working visit to the hospital on July 4, where he inspected development projects and assessed service delivery.

Prof. Shemdoe said the investment reflects the Sixth Phase Government's commitment, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to expanding access to quality healthcare through the construction and rehabilitation of dispensaries, health centres and district hospitals.

He said the funds approved by President Samia will finance the construction of an emergency unit, a maternity ward, a children's clinic and a perimeter fence to enhance the hospital's security and protect its infrastructure.

"The government remains committed to strengthening the health sector by investing in modern infrastructure that will improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services for citizens," Prof. Shemdoe said.

He thanked President Samia for approving the funds, noting that the investment would significantly improve healthcare delivery in Ulanga District.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima said the project demonstrates the government's determination to ensure that quality health services are available closer to communities.

He noted that continued investment in healthcare infrastructure is improving access to essential medical services while reducing the burden on patients who previously had to travel long distances for treatment.

Ulanga Member of Parliament Salim Alaudin welcomed the project, saying the upgrading of Mahenge Hospital would greatly benefit residents who have long depended on Ifakara Town Council for emergency medical services.

According to the MP, the lack of adequate emergency facilities in Mahenge had forced patients to travel considerable distances, contributing to delays in treatment and, in some cases, preventable deaths.

During his tour, Prof. Shemdoe also inspected and laid foundation stones for development projects worth more than Sh11 billion across the district.

Among the projects is the Sh2.35 billion Mbuga Bridge, which will improve transport connectivity along the Mwaya–Iputi–Luhumbero road and support economic and social activities in the area.

The latest investment forms part of the government's broader programme to strengthen public service delivery by improving healthcare, transport and other essential infrastructure in local government authorities across the country.
