Fire and rescue services boost safety in Mbeya District

Residents of Mbeya District are set to benefit from improved emergency response services following the establishment of a Fire and Rescue Force presence in the area, a move expected to reduce response delays and strengthen disaster preparedness.

Mbeya District Executive Director Erica E. Yegella said bringing fire and rescue services closer to communities will enhance public safety, especially as the district continues to experience growth in population, businesses and infrastructure development.

Yegella made the remarks after receiving Fire and Rescue Force officers at the district council offices, where she highlighted the importance of having emergency services within reach to respond quickly to incidents.

“I thank the Mbeya Regional Commissioner for bringing Fire and Rescue services closer to our district. Previously, firefighters had to come from the city, which sometimes caused delays in reaching areas affected by emergencies,” she said.

She said the presence of the force will also provide an opportunity for residents, institutions and businesses to receive more education on fire prevention and safety measures.

The Head of Mbeya District Fire and Rescue Station, Staff Sergeant Leah Mwanyambo, said the force is now operating from Mbalizi, within the Mbeya District Council headquarters at Iwindi, improving its ability to respond to emergencies.

She said the station has already handled two fire incidents involving buildings since beginning operations, preventing further damage that could have affected property and lives.

“We encourage citizens to remain alert and report any signs of fire risks early. Prevention and timely reporting are key to reducing the impact of disasters,” Mwanyambo said.

The Fire and Rescue Force urged residents to contact the emergency number 114 whenever they notice fire incidents or potential risks, while encouraging communities to participate in fire safety education programmes provided by the force.

The move is part of broader efforts to bring essential public services closer to citizens and improve disaster management capacity in Mbeya District.
