Technical experts from the East African Community have opened discussions ahead of the first Council of Ministers responsible for social sectors, laying the groundwork for regional policies aimed at improving employment, social protection and the welfare of East Africans.

The week-long meeting, taking place in Dar es Salaam from July 2 to 7, 2026, brings together delegates overseeing gender, children, youth, labour, social protection and migration from EAC partner states.

The discussions began with a technical experts' session running from July 2 to 4, where participants are reviewing policy proposals and preparing recommendations.

Their report will be considered by Permanent Secretaries before being presented to ministers at the inaugural Council meeting on July 7.

The meeting marks an important step in strengthening cooperation on social development within the regional bloc as member states seek common approaches to addressing unemployment, labour mobility, migration, social security and the protection of vulnerable groups.

Officials are expected to develop strategies and harmonised policies that will ensure women, young people, children, older persons and people with disabilities benefit more equitably from the opportunities created through regional integration.

The meeting is also expected to examine ways of improving coordination in labour and migration management while strengthening social protection systems and expanding access to decent employment across the region.

Resolutions adopted by the ministers are expected to guide future regional programmes and policy reforms, supporting the EAC's efforts to deepen social and economic integration while improving the livelihoods of citizens throughout East Africa.
