Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi has called for stronger economic diplomacy and regional cooperation among East African Community (EAC) member states, saying it is essential for driving inclusive economic growth and improving the livelihoods of citizens across the region.
Dr. Mwinyi made the remarks on July 6, 2026, at the State House in Zanzibar when he met Tanzania’s newly appointed Ambassador to Uganda, Major General Marco Elisha Gaguti, who paid a courtesy visit before departing for his diplomatic assignment.
He said East African countries must intensify collaboration in trade, investment, and economic diplomacy to ensure citizens fully benefit from the vast economic opportunities available within the region.
He noted that closer cooperation among partner states remains a key pillar for achieving sustainable development and expanding economic prosperity for ordinary people.
Dr. Mwinyi emphasized that strengthening regional integration would help open up markets, attract more investments, and stimulate cross-border business activities that directly benefit communities through job creation and improved income opportunities.
He added that economic diplomacy should remain a priority for Tanzanian envoys abroad, particularly in promoting investment and tourism opportunities.
He directed Ambassador Gaguti to actively market Tanzania’s investment opportunities, including those in Zanzibar, to Ugandan business communities, private sector actors, and potential investors.
He said such efforts would help increase foreign direct investment and further strengthen economic ties between Tanzania and Uganda for the benefit of citizens in both countries.
Dr. Mwinyi assured the ambassador of the government’s full support in executing his duties, urging him to engage closely with business leaders and investment stakeholders in Uganda to encourage them to take advantage of Tanzania’s stable and investor-friendly environment.
On his part, Ambassador Major General Marco Elisha Gaguti pledged to fulfill his responsibilities effectively, saying he would strictly follow official guidance while prioritizing the promotion of economic diplomacy between Tanzania and Uganda.
He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening trade, investment, and mutually beneficial cooperation that supports economic growth and improves the lives of citizens.
