Chunya Water Project set to ease long-standing supply challenges

Thousands of residents in Chunya District are set to benefit from improved access to clean and safe water as the government moves forward with the 28 Towns Water Supply Project, valued at $16 million.

Lupa Member of Parliament Masache Kasaka said the project will significantly increase water availability by raising production capacity from the current 1.5 million litres per day to more than 4.4 million litres per day.

The increase is expected to expand water services to more households and businesses, reducing the challenges faced by residents who have experienced unreliable supply for years.

Kasaka said government funding had already been provided to begin implementation of the project, with the new system expected to draw water from the Gwazira River.

"The 28 Towns Water Supply Project will provide a lasting solution to the water challenges facing Chunya residents. It will improve access to clean and safe water and support social and economic activities in the district," Kasaka said.

He said water service coverage in Lupa Constituency had improved from 26 per cent to 52 per cent since he became MP, particularly in urban areas, due to ongoing government interventions.

Kasaka added that efforts would now focus on extending water services to rural communities and ensuring that villages and hamlets are connected to reliable water sources.

"The goal is to make sure every resident benefits from these investments by expanding services beyond urban centres to rural areas," he said.

Residents have welcomed the planned project, with Simbilimwaya Sub-village Chairperson Morris Mathias saying timely completion of the scheme would help address a major challenge affecting the community.

Mathias called for continued coordination between government authorities and local leaders to ensure the project is completed within the planned timeframe and delivers the intended benefits to Chunya residents.
