TPV strengthens inclusive sports drive through sitting Volleyball training

The Tanzania ParaVolley Association (TPV) has intensified efforts to promote inclusive sports by successfully completing specialised training for sports teachers on Sitting Volleyball, a programme expected to expand opportunities for athletes with disabilities across the country.

The training, which concluded on July 13, 2026, at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), brought together sports educators and focused on equipping them with modern coaching techniques and practical skills needed to introduce and develop Sitting Volleyball in schools, learning institutions and communities.

TPV Chairman Freddie Selengia said the training marked an important step in building a strong foundation for the growth of the sport in Tanzania by increasing the number of qualified instructors capable of identifying and nurturing talent.

“By training more teachers, we are creating a wider network that will help bring Sitting Volleyball closer to students and communities, while giving people with disabilities greater opportunities to participate in competitive sports,” Selengia said.

Selengia, who is also a World ParaVolley Level II International Coach and Referee, said the sport has the potential to transform lives by promoting inclusion, confidence, physical wellbeing and equal participation in society.

He noted that developing Sitting Volleyball would also strengthen Tanzania’s competitiveness in regional and international para-sports competitions through improved talent identification and athlete preparation.

TPV Secretary General Dr Janeth Mlay said the association would continue working with education institutions, sports organisations and other stakeholders to ensure the sport reaches more communities.

Dr Mlay, who is also a World ParaVolley Level I International Coach and Referee, said expanding the sport’s reach would help discover new athletes and provide a pathway for people with disabilities to pursue sporting careers.

“TPV remains committed to creating more opportunities for participation by working with partners to promote Sitting Volleyball in schools, institutions and communities throughout the country,” she said.

The association has called on government institutions, sports stakeholders, education providers and the public to support initiatives aimed at advancing para-sports and creating an environment where athletes with disabilities can compete and achieve their full potential.

Through programmes such as the Sitting Volleyball coaching initiative, TPV aims to build a more inclusive sporting landscape while positioning Tanzania as a stronger competitor in international para-sports.
