Aweso seeks South Africa expertise to cut water losses

By Our Correspondent

Minister for Water Jumaa Aweso has embarked on a working visit to South Africa to explore practical solutions that will help Tanzania reduce water losses and improve the reliability of water services for millions of citizens.

The visit, which started on July 6, 2026, focuses on engaging water sector experts and stakeholders on modern technologies and management systems capable of identifying leaks, controlling losses and improving efficiency in water distribution networks.

Water losses remain a major challenge in Tanzania’s water sector, affecting the amount of water reaching consumers and reducing revenue collected by water supply authorities.

Addressing the challenge is expected to strengthen the financial sustainability of water utilities while ensuring more citizens have access to clean and safe water.

The Ministry of Water has listed reducing non-revenue water as one of its key priorities for the 2026/2027 financial year, as part of broader government efforts to improve water availability and service delivery across the country.

The South Africa visit provides an opportunity for Tanzania to learn from technologies and strategies used in managing water systems, with the aim of adopting approaches that can deliver greater efficiency and better services to wananchi.

Aweso is accompanied by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Engineer Mwajuma Waziri, Tanzania’s Ambassador to South Africa James Bwana, and other ministry officials.

Beyond water sector engagements, Aweso also joined Tanzanian and South African stakeholders on July 7 to mark World Kiswahili Language Day, where he launched the Tanzania Kiswahili Cultural Center.

The centre is aimed at promoting Kiswahili internationally by providing a platform for foreigners to learn the language while experiencing Tanzanian culture.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s cultural diplomacy and contribute to the continued growth of Kiswahili as a global language.
