Two drivers lose licences after dangerous driving stunt goes viral in Arusha

The Traffic Police Unit in Arusha Region has arrested two truck drivers and suspended their driving licences after a viral social media video showed them driving recklessly and endangering other road users.

The incident, which has sparked public concern, involved two Scania trucks being driven in a dangerous manner on a public road, behaviour that authorities say directly violated road safety regulations.

Confirming the action on June 1, 2026, Arusha Regional Traffic Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Zauda Mohamed, identified the drivers as Reginald Nzonda, who was driving vehicle registration number T. 869 EJP, and Hatibu Kapire, who was driving vehicle registration number T. 136 EFP.

ACP Mohamed said the decision to arrest the drivers and suspend their licences followed the circulation of clear video footage on social media showing the unsafe driving behaviour.

She said the police force will not tolerate any form of reckless driving, particularly incidents staged or recorded for social media attention, warning that such actions put the lives of passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists at serious risk.

“We are continuing to monitor road behaviour, including content shared on social media platforms. Any driver found engaging in dangerous conduct will face strict legal measures in accordance with the law,” she said.

ACP Mohamed further cautioned young and professional drivers against being influenced by the pursuit of online fame, saying road safety must always remain a priority over popularity.

She urged all drivers to strictly observe traffic laws, regulations, and professional ethics while on the road, emphasizing that discipline remains key to reducing road accidents.

In their own remarks after being apprehended, the two drivers admitted that they engaged in the behaviour in an attempt to attract more followers on social media.

They expressed regret over their actions, acknowledging that the stunt violated traffic laws and could have caused serious accidents or loss of life.

The drivers also called on their fellow motorists to avoid reckless driving and to always prioritize safety over social media influence and personal gain.
