The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), is set to conduct a nationwide census of marine transport vessels as part of efforts to improve data accuracy, strengthen safety, and support the development of the maritime transport sector in Tanzania.
The announcement was made in Dodoma on June 3, 2026, during the signing of a cooperation agreement between the two institutions.
Speaking at the event, TASAC Director General Mohamed Salumu said the exercise will help update and verify data collected in the 2021 census to reflect the current state of the sector.
He noted that the 2021 census recorded about 6,000 marine vessels operating in the country, but current estimates suggest the number could have risen significantly to around 21,600 vessels.
He said the new census will provide a more accurate picture of the sector, enabling better planning, regulation, and development strategies.
According to Salumu, reliable statistics are essential for improving maritime safety, strengthening regulatory oversight, and attracting investment in water transport infrastructure and services.
He added that updated data will also support more effective monitoring of marine transport activities across Tanzania’s lakes, rivers, and ocean waters.
On her part, the Government Statistician General, Amina Msengwa, said the partnership between TASAC and NBS will strengthen the country’s statistical system and ensure the availability of accurate data for policy formulation and development planning in the maritime sector.
She said the results of the census will enhance business competitiveness, attract investment, and provide a strong foundation for long-term planning in the transport sector.
She further emphasized that evidence-based planning remains key to improving efficiency and service delivery.
Msengwa also urged owners and operators of marine vessels to fully participate in the exercise, noting that the outcomes will benefit them through improved vessel identification, stronger regulation, and better government services.
TASAC Director of Economic Regulation, Nashon Sigala, said the agreement marks an important step in adopting modern statistical systems within the maritime transport sector.
He added that the initiative will improve operational efficiency and contribute to broader national economic growth.
The census is expected to play a key role in shaping future maritime policies, enhancing safety standards, and supporting the modernization of Tanzania’s water transport system, which remains vital for trade and connectivity across the country.
