Tanzania’s Weights Agency (WMA) moves to verify mobile data bundles after consumer complaints

Residents of Dodoma have called on the government, through the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA), to strengthen oversight of internet data bundles and mobile call time measurements, citing concerns over the rapid depletion of purchased data without clear explanations.

The consumers said there was a need for greater transparency and accuracy in how mobile data packages and airtime are measured and charged, arguing that users should receive the exact value of the services they pay for.

Some residents who spoke in Dodoma expressed frustration that megabytes (MBs) and gigabytes (GBs) purchased through mobile networks are sometimes exhausted within a short period, including occasions when they believe they have not actively used their devices, raising questions over the accuracy of such measurements.

Dodoma Regional Weights and Measures Agency Manager, Said Ibrahim, said the agency had received concerns from stakeholders and had started a process to strengthen verification and oversight of digital measurements, including internet data bundles and mobile call durations.

He said the move is aimed at ensuring fairness, consumer protection and confidence in the measurement of digital services, in line with WMA’s mandate of ensuring accuracy in trade and service transactions.

The development reflects growing public demand for transparency in the rapidly expanding digital economy, where mobile internet services have become essential for communication, education, business and access to online services.
