Retirees Told to Resolve Name Discrepancies to Complete Pension Verification

The Ministry of Finance has directed retirees receiving pensions through the Treasury to regularise name discrepancies in their official records after some failed to complete the ongoing verification exercise due to inconsistencies in their names.

In a public notice issued to pensioners, the ministry said the verification process had revealed a number of cases where retirees' names differed across legal and administrative documents, making it difficult to confirm their identities and process their records successfully.

To address the challenge, affected retirees have been instructed to follow the legal procedures for changing or correcting their names.

The process includes obtaining a Deed Poll and publishing the name change in the Government Gazette, as required by law.

The ministry said retirees who complete the process should submit the relevant legal documents to the nearest Sub-Treasury Office for record updates.

The documents may also be lodged at the Ministry of Finance headquarters, while pensioners in Zanzibar can submit them to the Ministry of Finance and Planning Zanzibar.

The directive forms part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve the accuracy of pension records and strengthen the integrity of pension administration systems.

Accurate personal information is considered critical in ensuring that pension payments reach the rightful beneficiaries and that public funds are managed effectively.

The ministry also warned retirees against fraudsters who may attempt to exploit the verification exercise by charging fees or offering unofficial assistance.

“All services provided to retirees are free of charge,” the ministry said, urging pensioners to seek support only through authorised government offices.

The notice comes as the government continues implementing measures to enhance accountability and efficiency in public service delivery, including the management of pension payments for retired public servants.
