Mwinyi declares June 17 public holiday in Zanzibar to mark Islamic New Year 1448 AH

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has declared June 17, 2026, a public holiday in Zanzibar to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1448 Hijri.

The announcement was made on June 15, 2026, at the State House in Zanzibar, where President Mwinyi said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to recognizing and respecting important religious events observed by communities across the Isles and the country.

He said the holiday will allow Muslims to observe the Islamic New Year through prayers, supplications, and charitable acts, while reflecting on values of peace, unity, and social harmony.

President Mwinyi emphasized that the Islamic New Year is a time of spiritual renewal, urging believers to strengthen family relationships, uphold good moral conduct, and actively contribute to community development. He noted that such values are essential in building a peaceful and prosperous society.

He also called on citizens to use the occasion to pray for continued peace, security, and development in Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole, while promoting unity and understanding among people of different faiths and backgrounds.
