Mwenge traders, motorcycle riders reject planned July 7 demonstrations

Small-scale traders and motorcycle taxi operators (bodaboda) in Mwenge, Dar es Salaam, have declared that they will not participate in demonstrations planned for July 7, 2026, saying they have no intention of engaging in activities that could threaten peace, security and their livelihoods.

The group said the decision was reached after a series of internal meetings in which members agreed to prioritize the protection of their businesses and working areas.

They noted that their position has been influenced by the experiences and losses they suffered during the unrest of October 29, 2025.

According to the traders, the previous disturbances resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property and severe damage to businesses.

Many shops were reportedly looted, while others were set on fire, leading to substantial financial losses for business owners.

Speaking on behalf of traders at Mwenge Market, Ms Tumaini Ulotu said the business community had unanimously resolved not to take part in the planned demonstrations.

"As traders in Mwenge, we have agreed that we will not participate in the demonstrations being mobilized for July 7 because we have seen the consequences of similar events in the past. Some people lost relatives and friends, while others saw their businesses severely affected. On that day, we will continue with our normal business activities and we call on the government to strengthen security measures," she said.

The traders also recalled the economic hardships experienced by families following restrictions imposed during the previous unrest. Many bodaboda operators were unable to work and earn an income, while households faced difficulties accessing essential goods and services.

They said the situation created significant challenges for families that depended on daily earnings to meet their basic needs, including food and other necessities.

The group further emphasized that it would not allow itself to be used for political purposes by individuals pursuing personal interests.

They urged young people across the country to avoid being manipulated into participating in actions that could undermine peace and stability.

The traders maintained that preserving a peaceful environment remains essential for economic activities, employment and the well-being of communities, adding that stability allows businesses to operate and citizens to pursue their daily activities without disruption.
