Tanzania’s Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, has directed the management of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) to take immediate steps to improve the welfare of seafarers in the country.
The measures include facilitating access to maritime employment, establishing a national database of all Tanzanian seafarers, and strengthening institutions responsible for safeguarding their welfare.
Speaking during the climax of the 16th International Day of the Seafarer celebrations held at Mwanga Community Centre in Kigoma Region, Prof. Mbarawa said the Government will continue to enhance working conditions, training, and safety for seafarers in order to increase their competitiveness in the global labour market.
He emphasized that the maritime transport sector remains a key pillar of the blue economy, noting that policy and operational reforms must go hand in hand with empowering maritime professionals to fully benefit from available opportunities locally and internationally.
Presenting the implementation report of the celebrations on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Director of Transport and Environment, Bi. Stella Katondo, said the 2026 commemorations involved various activities including maritime safety education, stakeholder exhibitions, environmental conservation campaigns for water bodies, and practical rescue drills conducted on Lake Tanganyika.
She noted that these activities have increased public awareness of the contribution of seafarers to economic growth and trade, particularly in regions dependent on water transport.
On his part, TASAC Director General, Mohamed Salum, said the Government through TASAC has continued to strengthen maritime transport safety, enforce international standards, and improve working conditions for seafarers in order to expand employment opportunities both locally and abroad.
Earlier, acting Kigoma Regional Commissioner, Rashid Chuachua, said the commemorations have brought significant benefits to citizens through education on maritime safety and opportunities within the blue economy.
He added that Kigoma Region will continue collaborating with the Government and stakeholders to advance transport and trade activities through Lake Tanganyika.
This year’s celebrations, which began on June 22, 2026, were held under the theme: “From Policy to Implementation: Enhancing Excellence in the Maritime Transport Sector,” and brought together various stakeholders in the maritime industry.
