The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding job opportunities for young people both within the country and in international labour markets, through continued reforms aimed at improving policies, laws, regulations and employment systems.
The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office – Labour, Youth Employment and Persons with Disabilities, Deus Sangu, said the government is determined to create a stronger and more inclusive labour market that enables more young people to access decent employment and improve their livelihoods.
He made the remarks in Dar es Salaam during a farewell ceremony for youths who are set to travel abroad for employment opportunities.
He said employment remains a key pillar of national development, as it increases household incomes, reduces poverty, strengthens social welfare and contributes to overall economic growth.
The Minister commended the efforts of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting that her diplomatic engagements have continued to open more doors for Tanzanian youths in global job markets.
He said that during her second phase in office, a total of 8,408 youths have been connected to overseas employment opportunities, describing this as the highest number ever recorded in the country.
He explained that the government views overseas employment as an important strategy for expanding job opportunities for young people.
It not only provides income but also helps youths gain practical skills, work experience, and exposure to modern technologies and international work standards.
He added that the government will continue strengthening systems that support safe labour migration, including improved coordination, better preparation of workers, and protection of workers’ rights before departure and while abroad.
The Minister also urged the youths to use their earnings responsibly by saving, investing, and building financial discipline.
He encouraged them to work closely with financial institutions and to take advantage of financial literacy opportunities that will help them secure their future.
In addition, he advised them to join the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) through available schemes to ensure they have social protection and financial security after completing their contracts abroad.
He further called on the youths to act as responsible ambassadors of Tanzania while working in foreign countries.
He emphasized the importance of discipline, hard work, integrity, and respect for the laws, culture and traditions of host countries, while maintaining Tanzanian values and national identity.
He said Tanzanian youths working abroad represent the country and should therefore demonstrate professionalism and good conduct that reflects positively on Tanzania.
He assured them that the government will continue to improve employment systems and strengthen support services for all workers going abroad.
The Director of Employment Services, Jane Sorogo, said the youths have secured jobs in countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bosnia and Germany.
She said all selected candidates have undergone special pre-departure training to prepare them for work environments abroad.
She explained that the training equips them with knowledge on labour rights, workplace responsibilities, and cultural expectations in the countries where they will be working.
This is part of the government’s efforts to ensure safe, informed and well-managed labour migration.
Speaking on behalf of the departing youths, Husna Seif, who will work in Saudi Arabia as a hotel cleaner, thanked the government for creating access to overseas job opportunities.
She said the opportunity will help her gain skills, improve her income and support her family.
Another youth, Ally Mwajei, who will work as a taxi driver abroad, also expressed gratitude to the government. He said the job will help him achieve his personal goals, learn new environments and experience different cultures.
He encouraged other young people in Tanzania to continue applying for job opportunities whenever they are announced, saying they can be a gateway to success.
The government has continued to prioritize youth employment as part of its broader development agenda, focusing on creating opportunities locally and internationally to reduce unemployment and promote inclusive economic growth.
