The long-awaited Kilwa Masoko Fishery Port, a major government investment promised by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, is now fully ready to begin operations after reaching 99.99 per cent completion, authorities have confirmed.

Lindi Regional Commissioner Zainab Telack said the project has entered its final phase, which involves testing and verification of all installed machinery and infrastructure before the facility officially opens for use.

She said the historic testing exercise conducted on June 25, 2026, in Kilwa District marked a major milestone, as key systems were successfully activated and demonstrated strong performance.

Among the tested facilities was an advanced ice-making plant capable of producing up to 100 tonnes of ice per day at freezing temperatures of up to -3°C, a critical component expected to improve fish preservation and reduce post-harvest losses.

According to the Regional Commissioner, the near-complete status of the project signals readiness for full operations, noting that the government has delivered a modern infrastructure that will transform the fisheries sector along the southern coastal belt.

She highlighted that the port includes essential systems such as ice production units, fuel storage facilities, cold chain infrastructure, and other supporting equipment designed to improve efficiency in fishing activities and enhance the handling of fish products from landing to market.

The Regional Commissioner commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for allocating more than Sh280 billion for the construction of the landmark project, describing it as a strategic investment that will open new economic opportunities for fishermen, traders, and the wider community.

She also praised the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries for ensuring effective supervision throughout the implementation process, which has enabled the project to reach its final stage with high standards of quality and functionality.

Officials from the ministry said the port is a key driver in the government’s broader agenda to strengthen the fisheries value chain by improving processing, storage, and access to both domestic and international markets.

The facility is expected to significantly boost value addition and increase earnings for stakeholders in the sector.

Technical experts overseeing the project confirmed that all tested systems are operating efficiently and meet the required specifications, adding that final adjustments are being completed ahead of official commissioning.

With construction and testing now at an advanced stage, the Kilwa Masoko Fishery Port is expected to soon begin full operations, positioning it as a modern hub for Tanzania’s growing blue economy and a catalyst for development in Lindi Region and beyond.
