The government has warned that it will take firm action against individuals whose actions threaten national peace and stability, while defending its development record by pointing to continued economic growth and major infrastructure investments.
Speaking at a press briefing in Dodoma on Sunday, June 28, Government Chief Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, said safeguarding peace and national unity remains essential for sustaining Tanzania's development agenda.
He urged media organisations to continue supporting national development by adhering to professional standards, ethical principles and the country's laws.
Mr Msigwa cautioned against the use of media platforms to disseminate false information, hate speech, incitement and misleading content, saying such practices could undermine social cohesion and public order.
"The government will not allow a few individuals to use misinformation or engage in actions intended to weaken the country," he said, adding that authorities would continue taking measures to preserve peace and ensure citizens can carry out their economic activities without disruption.
The government also used the briefing to outline progress in the country's economic performance, with Mr Msigwa saying improved domestic revenue collection has strengthened public finances.
He said locally generated revenue is expected to finance 74.2 percent of the 2026/27 national budget, reducing reliance on external funding and enhancing fiscal sustainability.
According to him, the government has continued investing in strategic infrastructure projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), roads, airports, ports, electricity generation, water supply, healthcare, education and agriculture.
He said the projects are improving access to public services while creating conditions for higher productivity and long-term economic growth.
On the energy sector, Mr Msigwa said the completion of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, together with other power generation initiatives, has significantly increased electricity production, improving energy reliability for industries, businesses and households.
He also highlighted Tanzania's growing diplomatic engagement, saying international partnerships and bilateral agreements are helping attract investment, expand trade, promote tourism and create employment opportunities.
Mr Msigwa commended Tanzanians for maintaining peace and participating in productive economic activities, saying continued national development depends on unity, accountability and collective responsibility.
He urged citizens to continue observing the law and supporting government development programmes, reaffirming the government's commitment to implementing projects aimed at improving people's livelihoods across the country.
