Government to receive public views on Serengeti Boys’ performance

By Victoria Godfrey

The Government has announced that it is welcoming views from citizens regarding the performance of the national Under-17 football team, the Serengeti Boys, as part of efforts to strengthen youth football development and improve future international results.

Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, said the Government values feedback from Tanzanians on the team’s performance, noting that such opinions are important for shaping the future of football in the country.

Makonda made the remarks on June 2, 2026, in Morocco, just hours before the Serengeti Boys took to the pitch to face Senegal in the final of the Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations (AFCON U-17).

He said public comments on the team should not be misunderstood or negatively interpreted, stressing that they reflect the strong passion and emotional investment of Tanzanians in their national team and their desire to see better performance on the international stage.

According to him, the growing engagement from fans demonstrates how football continues to unite the nation and inspire national pride.

He noted that citizens are increasingly involved in discussing team performance, strategy, and development, which he described as a healthy sign for the growth of the sport.

Makonda emphasized that the Government will continue to listen to public views and consider them in ongoing reforms aimed at improving youth football structures, training systems, and player development pathways.

He further assured Tanzanians that the Government remains fully committed to supporting the Serengeti Boys as they represent the country in continental competitions. He said efforts are being made to ensure that the players are provided with a conducive environment to compete effectively and gain valuable international experience.

He added that constructive criticism from the public plays a key role in identifying strengths and weaknesses within national teams, which in turn helps improve overall performance.

However, he urged citizens to maintain unity and avoid discouraging interpretations of public debate around the team.

The Minister called on Tanzanians to continue supporting the Serengeti Boys as they compete at the highest level, saying national encouragement is crucial in motivating young players in high-pressure matches such as tournament finals.

He concluded that the development of Tanzanian football requires collective responsibility, where both the Government and citizens work together to build a stronger, more competitive national team for the future.
