Government expands housing projects to improve working conditions for public servants

The Government of Tanzania has intensified efforts to improve the working environment for public servants through the construction of modern staff houses, a move aimed at strengthening service delivery and increasing efficiency across the public sector.

The initiative is being implemented through ongoing housing development projects in various parts of the country, including education institutions, where many workers have for years faced challenges of inadequate and dilapidated accommodation.

This was stated by the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation from the President’s Office – Public Service Management and Good Governance, Mr. Patrick Allute, during an inspection tour of staff housing projects at Ngolela Primary School in Kyela District and Idweli Primary School in Rungwe District, Mbeya Region.

The visit brought together experts from the President’s Office alongside Watumishi Housing Investments (WHI).

Mr. Allute said the Government’s investment in housing for public servants is part of broader reforms aimed at improving productivity, particularly in key service sectors such as education.

He noted that access to decent housing plays a major role in motivating workers and enabling them to deliver quality services to citizens.

“Through these investments, the Government is ensuring that public servants work in a more conducive environment. Better housing improves morale, reduces unnecessary travel distances, and ultimately enhances service delivery to citizens,” said Mr. Allute.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the houses once completed, stressing that they are public assets meant to serve both current and future generations of civil servants.

“The Government continues to invest significant resources in these projects. It is the responsibility of beneficiaries to ensure proper care and maintenance so that these houses remain useful for many years to come,” he added.

Speaking during the visit, the Assistant Director for Planning and Budget from the President’s Office – Public Service Management, Ms. Julieth Magambo, said the Government remains committed to ensuring public servants live in safe, decent, and reliable housing as part of efforts to improve efficiency in public service delivery.

She said the ongoing projects are designed to address long-standing housing shortages, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas where many teachers and other public servants face difficulties in securing suitable accommodation.

Earlier, the Head Teacher of Ngolela Primary School, Mr. Samson Anyosisye, expressed appreciation to the Government, noting that many existing staff houses were old, unsafe, and no longer fit for use, forcing teachers to live far from the school and affecting attendance and performance.

He said the new housing project will significantly improve working conditions and help attract and retain teachers at the school.

Similarly, a teacher at Idweli Primary School, Mr. Tejile Mathew, said the availability of quality housing would boost morale among teachers and improve efficiency in delivering education services to pupils.

The Government has continued to prioritize investment in staff housing as part of its broader strategy to strengthen public service delivery and ensure citizens receive timely and quality services across the country.
