The Road Fund Board (RFB) has intensified public awareness on how fuel levies collected from petrol and diesel contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Tanzania’s road network, highlighting their crucial role in sustaining the country’s economic and social development.
During the ongoing Public Service Week exhibitions at Chinangali Park in Dodoma, RFB Acting Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Rashid Kalimbaga, said fuel levies remain the primary source of funds used to finance road maintenance activities across the country.
He explained that the funding mechanism was designed to ensure roads remain safe, reliable and passable throughout the year, enabling the efficient movement of people and goods.
“Every contribution made through fuel levies plays a significant role in ensuring our roads continue to serve Tanzanians effectively. A well-maintained road network supports economic growth by connecting production areas with markets and improving access to essential social services,” said Engineer Kalimbaga.
Apart from fuel levy collections, he noted that the Road Fund also receives revenue from charges paid by foreign vehicles using Tanzania’s road network. The funds are allocated to maintenance of national roads managed by TANROADS and district and urban roads under TARURA.
According to Engineer Kalimbaga, the Road Fund currently supports maintenance of more than 181,000 kilometres of roads nationwide, a network that remains a critical pillar in facilitating trade, transportation and overall national development.
He encouraged citizens to visit the RFB exhibition booth during Public Service Week to gain a deeper understanding of the institution’s responsibilities, sources of revenue and how the funds collected are utilised to improve road infrastructure.
This year’s Public Service Week celebrations are being held under the theme “Promoting Inclusive Accountability for Sustainable Service Delivery,” reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening transparency, public participation and quality service provision.
