Free surgery gives new hope to patients with cleft lip and palate at Muhimbili

The partnership between the Muhimbili National Hospital and Smile Train Tanzania is continuing to transform lives across the country, as children and adults born with cleft lip and cleft palate are receiving free screening, surgery, and comprehensive treatment at no cost.

Health officials say the programme is open to patients from all regions of Tanzania, with arrangements in place to support those who may face challenges in reaching the hospital.

Under the initiative, eligible patients can be assisted with transport to Muhimbili and returned home after treatment, with all costs covered through the programme.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Director of MNH, Director of Surgical Services, Dr. Rachel Mhavile, said the hospital has strengthened its referral and care systems to ensure that patients receive timely and coordinated treatment.

She explained that cleft conditions remain among the common birth-related challenges in the country, requiring a multi-specialist approach for effective recovery.

“Muhimbili has put in place an integrated system where surgeons, nutrition experts, speech therapists and other specialists work together to ensure patients receive complete care from the time they arrive until full recovery,” she said.

Dr. Mhavile urged parents and guardians to seek medical attention early once they notice signs of cleft lip or palate in children, noting that early treatment greatly improves outcomes and helps children live normal, healthy lives.

On her part, Smile Train Tanzania Project Manager Veronica Kamwela reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible patient receives free treatment without limitation on numbers.

She said awareness remains a major challenge, as many families still live with the condition without knowing that treatment is available and fully funded.

“We encourage families to bring forward children and adults living with cleft conditions. Treatment is safe, effective, and completely free at Muhimbili,” she said.

Kamwela added that the long-standing partnership between Smile Train and Muhimbili has already restored dignity and confidence to many patients who, after surgery, are now able to eat, speak, and socialize without difficulty.

Health authorities are now urging communities across Tanzania to report and refer individuals with cleft conditions early so they can access timely care and avoid long-term complications.

Families in need of assistance have been advised to contact Muhimbili National Hospital through 0790 312 335 to begin the registration and treatment process.
