For nearly two centuries, Denmark has commemorated one of the most significant milestones in its national history, Constitution Day, known locally as Grundlovsdag, which marks the adoption of the Danish Constitution on June 5, 1849.
The historic document transformed Denmark from an absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy, laying the foundation for democratic governance, civil liberties, rule of law and citizen participation in public affairs.
The Constitution established a parliamentary system and guaranteed fundamental rights that have since become central pillars of Danish society.
Observed annually on June 5, Constitution Day remains a symbol of Denmark’s democratic identity and commitment to freedom, equality and accountable governance.
This year’s celebration carried special significance as Denmark marked the 177th anniversary of the landmark event, reflecting on a democratic journey that has influenced not only its domestic development but also its international engagement and development partnerships around the world.
In Tanzania, the occasion was commemorated through a diplomatic reception attended by government leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners and stakeholders from various sectors, highlighting the enduring ties between Tanzania and Denmark.
Speaking during the celebrations on behalf of the Minister for Health, Mohamed Mchengerwa, Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Florence Samizi, reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Denmark in the health sector to improve healthcare delivery, expand access to quality medical services and enhance health systems for the benefit of citizens.
Dr Samizi noted that Denmark has remained one of Tanzania’s longstanding development partners in the health sector for nearly six decades, supporting efforts aimed at improving public health outcomes and strengthening healthcare institutions across the country.
She said that through the Health Sector Programme Support initiative, Denmark has made significant contributions towards expanding healthcare services, improving access to treatment and promoting collaboration between public and private sector health providers.
According to Dr Samizi, several institutions, including Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC), CCBRT, APHFTA, Marie Stopes Tanzania and Sikika, have benefited from the partnership, resulting in improved health outcomes for communities across different parts of the country.
“This investment has not only strengthened institutions but has also saved lives, protected families and expanded opportunities for citizens to live healthier and more productive lives,” she said.
Dr Samizi further expressed appreciation for the ongoing collaboration under the Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation programme, describing it as an important platform for advancing health sector relations between the two countries.
She also commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her continued efforts in promoting health diplomacy and international cooperation, which have contributed significantly to the advancement of Tanzania’s healthcare sector.
Addressing the gathering, the Ambassador of Denmark to Tanzania Jesper Kammersgaard highlighted the strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations, emphasizing that health cooperation remains one of the cornerstones of the longstanding partnership.
The Ambassador noted that Denmark remains committed to working closely with Tanzania in supporting sustainable development, strengthening institutions and advancing people-centred healthcare initiatives.
The Ambassador further praised the progress achieved through decades of bilateral cooperation and expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to deliver meaningful results for future generations in both countries.
As Denmark celebrated 177 years since the birth of its constitutional democracy, the occasion also served as a reminder of how shared values of good governance, partnership and human development continue to shape international cooperation.
For Tanzania and Denmark, the anniversary was not only a celebration of history, but also a reaffirmation of a friendship and development partnership that continues to improve lives and strengthen ties between the two nations.
