The Board of Directors of the Dar es Salaam Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) has directed contractors and technical teams to ensure the timely completion of the installation of new raw water pumps at the Upper Ruvu Water Treatment Plant in Mlandizi, a project expected to boost water supply for more than seven million residents in Dar es Salaam and Pwani regions.

The project, valued at over Sh16 billion, is part of ongoing efforts by the utility to strengthen water production and distribution infrastructure amid rising demand in the country's commercial capital and surrounding areas.

During an inspection visit to the facility, DAWASA Board Chairman, Eng. Romanus Mwang’ingo, said the new pumps would significantly improve the efficiency of water abstraction, treatment and distribution, helping to enhance the reliability of water services for households and businesses.

He stressed the importance of completing the project on schedule, noting that delays could affect efforts to expand access to clean and safe water in the two fast-growing regions.

“We expect all staff and technical teams involved in this project to maintain high standards of professionalism and commitment to ensure the installation is completed on time. The public is looking forward to improved and sustainable water services, and it is our responsibility to deliver,” he said.

The board also reviewed progress on measures aimed at reducing water losses in Mlandizi and Kibaha, areas that form part of DAWASA’s wider network.

The authority has been implementing strategies to curb non-revenue water and improve operational efficiency as it seeks to maximize the benefits of existing and new infrastructure investments.

According to DAWASA, reducing water losses remains a key priority in ensuring that more consumers receive reliable services while improving the authority’s financial sustainability.

The Upper Ruvu Water Treatment Plant is one of the major sources of water for Dar es Salaam and parts of Pwani Region.

The installation of the new pumping systems is expected to increase production capacity and strengthen the resilience of the water supply network.

DAWASA has in recent years invested heavily in expanding and modernising water infrastructure, including treatment plants, transmission pipelines and distribution networks, as part of broader government efforts to improve access to clean and safe water across the country.

Once completed, the new pumping systems are expected to play a crucial role in meeting growing demand driven by rapid urbanisation and population growth in Dar es Salaam and neighbouring districts in Pwani Region.
