CCM warns against protests, reaffirms commitment to peace and development

By Carlos Claudio, Dodoma

The ruling party, CCM, has warned against demonstrations that it says could threaten national peace and stability, while urging citizens to uphold unity and focus on development.

Speaking to journalists in Dodoma, CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) Secretary for Ideology, Publicity and Training, Kenani Kihongosi, said the party had received information indicating that some leaders of CHADEMA were allegedly holding meetings linked to plans for demonstrations.

Mr Kihongosi said CCM remains committed to promoting peace, social cohesion and national unity, emphasizing that sustainable development can only be achieved in a stable environment.

“Information available to us indicates that there are meetings involving preparations for demonstrations that could jeopardize the stability of the country. We urge citizens not to take part in such activities,” he said.

He stressed that political differences should be resolved through dialogue, policy discussions and democratic processes rather than actions that could disrupt public order.

According to Mr Kihongosi, peace remains the cornerstone of Tanzania’s social and economic development, and citizens should avoid being influenced to participate in activities that may undermine national security.

He said security agencies have a responsibility to continue safeguarding peace and ensuring the safety of citizens and their property.

The CCM official also called on young people to channel their energy into productive economic and development activities rather than engaging in actions that could create tension or conflict.

He further urged the public to report any activities that may threaten peace and security to the relevant authorities so that appropriate measures can be taken.

Commenting on demonstrations, Mr Kihongosi said they often affect ordinary citizens more than those who organize them.

“Development-oriented politics should be built on ideas and policies. Conflict has never provided a lasting solution,” he said.

He also cautioned against statements and actions that could fuel divisions based on religion, ethnicity or geographical background.

Speaking about CCM’s recent nationwide tours, Mr Kihongosi said the party had witnessed strong public engagement, with citizens openly sharing their concerns while also expressing satisfaction with ongoing development projects.

He said the tours, which covered several regions and more than 40 districts, provided party leaders with an opportunity to meet citizens directly, listen to their challenges and gather feedback on government initiatives.

According to him, many citizens acknowledged positive changes brought about through development projects implemented under the Sixth Phase Government led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, particularly in the sectors of health, education, water and road infrastructure.

Mr Kihongosi added that improvements in domestic revenue collection have enabled the government to finance a wide range of development projects aimed at improving public services.

On CCM’s position in the country’s political landscape, he said the party remains strong due to its extensive leadership network that reaches grassroots communities, enabling it to respond more effectively to citizens’ concerns.

He dismissed claims that CCM is dominated by older generations, saying the party comprises members from all age groups and that the contribution of senior members remains vital in nation-building and strengthening the party.

“Experience and youthful energy are both important in strengthening the party and advancing the country's development agenda,” he said.
