Airtel Tanzania boosts rural connectivity with new network towers in Nanyumbu, Pangani, And Kondoa

Rural communities in Mtwara, Tanga, and Dodoma regions are experiencing improved digital access following the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure by Airtel Tanzania, which has launched new communication towers in underserved villages including Chungu Village in Nanyumbu District, Madanga Ward in Pangani District, and Pahi Village in Kondoa District.

For many years, these rural areas faced persistent challenges of weak or unreliable mobile network coverage. Limited connectivity reduced access to internet services and slowed down social and economic activities, particularly in farming and small-scale trade.

In Mtwara Region, residents of Chungu Village said they have lived with poor communication services since the village was established in 2004. With a population of more than 2,400 people, the area had minimal access to stable mobile signals, forcing residents to rely on limited network spots.

Village Chairperson Rajabu Zawadi Staudi said the situation had long affected daily life. “For many years, communication services were only available in a few areas, and internet access was almost nonexistent,” he said. He added that the new tower brings new hope for rural development, especially in agriculture and youth employment.

Farmers in the area said the improved network will help them better manage crops such as cashew nuts, sesame, pigeon peas, groundnuts, maize, and millet. They also expect easier access to mobile banking, market prices, and digital platforms that support agricultural trade.

In Tanga Region, residents of Madanga Ward in Pangani District described long-standing difficulties in accessing mobile signals, with some villagers previously climbing trees or moving to elevated areas just to receive network coverage.

During the launch of Airtel services in the area, local leaders led a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official improvement of communication services. Ward Councillor Mungia Kiluwasha and farmer Ismail Zubeiry said the new network will improve access to markets and strengthen rural trade activities.

Airtel Tanga Business Manager, Nassor Laizer, said the investment is aimed at supporting rural development. “This is a major opportunity for wananchi to improve their economic lives through better connectivity and digital services,” he said.

In Dodoma Region, residents of Pahi Village in Kondoa District also welcomed improved network services after years of poor connectivity that limited access to voice calls, SMS, and internet.

Thomas Sharif Thomas, Sales Manager for Kondoa zone, said the new infrastructure has improved communication quality and created opportunities for rural employment through Airtel agent networks and SIM registration services.

Village chairman, Shaibu Ali Omari, urged residents to protect the new infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits. Business owner Ali Kamil said becoming an Airtel agent has improved his income through mobile money services such as Lipa Namba, which has simplified rural transactions.

Across all three rural regions, residents now see improved connectivity as a key driver of development. They believe stronger mobile networks will enhance agriculture, expand business opportunities, and bridge the long-standing digital gap between rural communities and urban areas.
