Bagamoyo District Council has called on development partners to strengthen collaboration with the government in improving education infrastructure and advancing environmental conservation in schools to enhance learning environments for pupils.
The appeal was made on Thursday during a tree-planting exercise organized by Airtel Tanzania at Kiromo Primary School in Bagamoyo District, as part of activities marking World Environment Day.
Speaking on behalf of the Bagamoyo District Education Officer, Hamis Kimenya commended Airtel Tanzania for its continued support to Kiromo Primary School and urged other private-sector stakeholders to join efforts aimed at improving education and promoting environmental protection.
He said environmental conservation initiatives, particularly tree planting, play a key role in improving school surroundings, increasing green cover, providing shade, and creating a healthier and more conducive environment for learning.
“Bagamoyo District Council remains committed to creating an enabling environment for collaboration between government and the private sector, particularly in the education sector. We encourage more stakeholders to support schools and environmental conservation initiatives,” he said.
Airtel Tanzania Managing Director Charles Kamoto said World Environment Day serves as a global reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility requiring collective action from governments, private institutions and communities.
He said the company’s tree-planting initiative at Kiromo Primary School reflects its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.
“Today, we are not just planting trees; we are investing in our environment, our communities, and future generations,” Kamoto said. “These fruit trees will help protect the land, improve air quality, provide shade, and in the long run supply fruits that will benefit students and the surrounding community.”
Kamoto added that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Airtel Africa Foundation through its Adopt a School programme, which supports the development of safe, green, inclusive and conducive learning environments for children across Africa.
He noted that Airtel has continued to scale up environmental conservation efforts, recalling that last year the company carried out a beach clean-up exercise at Kawe Beach in Dar es Salaam. This year, the company has expanded its efforts through tree planting at Kiromo Primary School, demonstrating a growing commitment to sustainability
In another development, on June 5, 2026, Airtel also conducted a major beach clean-up exercise at Msasani and Kawe beaches in Dar es Salaam as part of World Environment Day activities. The exercise was supervised by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).
Speaking during the clean-up, NEMC Environmental Officer Felician Kairuki urged stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in environmental protection in line with national policies and environmental management strategies.
“We emphasize the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the environment is protected for the benefit of present and future generations,” Kairuki said.
He added that sustained cooperation between government institutions, private sector players and communities is essential in addressing environmental challenges such as pollution and waste management.
Head of Public Relations unit at Airtel Tanzania, Jackson Mbando said the company has continued to implement a range of sustainability initiatives, including the promotion of digital solutions that reduce reliance on paper and other materials that may contribute to environmental degradation.
He said these measures form part of Airtel’s broader commitment to responsible business practices and environmental stewardship.
Kawe Ward Executive Officer Husna Nondo commended Airtel for actively participating in the beach clean-up exercises, noting that local government authorities continue to take enforcement action against individuals and entities that pollute the environment.
She emphasized that collaboration between government, private sector and communities is critical in ensuring that beaches, public spaces and urban environments remain clean, safe and sustainable.
The combined initiatives in Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam highlight growing partnerships between the private sector, government agencies and regulatory bodies in advancing environmental conservation, promoting sustainability and improving social welfare across Tanzania.
