The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has highlighted ongoing cooperation between Zanzibar and India in key development sectors, particularly water, education, health, and energy.

Dr. Mwinyi made the remarks on May 14, 2026, at the State House in Zanzibar during a farewell meeting with the Indian Consul in Zanzibar, Kumar Praveen, who was concluding his diplomatic assignment in the country.

He said the partnership between Zanzibar and India has contributed to improvements in access to clean and safe water in both Unguja and Pemba through completed development projects.

Dr. Mwinyi also referred to a new water project valued at approximately 35 million US dollars, which is expected to further expand water services.

The project includes the development of nine water schemes, installation of new water storage tanks, drilling of boreholes, expansion of pipeline networks, and construction of a project office.

In the education and technology sector, he noted the role of IIT Madras Zanzibar in supporting training and skills development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), particularly for young people.

He added that Zanzibar continues to benefit from training opportunities provided through cooperation with India, including both short-term and long-term programmes aimed at strengthening human resource capacity in various fields.

In the health sector, Dr. Mwinyi stated that there is ongoing engagement with Indian institutions in areas such as medical training and service delivery, with the aim of improving healthcare systems.

He further noted that Indian private sector investments in renewable energy projects are contributing to efforts to improve electricity supply and support energy development in Zanzibar.

For his part, the Indian Consul, Mr. Praveen, reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening cooperation with Zanzibar.

He also noted progress in infrastructure and social services development, including roads, airports, and hospitals.
