The World Bank has expressed satisfaction with the performance of Tanzania’s National Environment Management Council (NEMC) and pledged to deepen cooperation in strengthening environmental management systems in the country.

The commitment emerged during high-level talks between NEMC and a World Bank delegation led by East and Southern Africa Regional Director Anna Wellenstein and senior official Muhammad Kandeel.

The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in key areas, including the implementation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), capacity building for environmental experts and government officials, and improving stakeholders’ understanding of World Bank environmental procedures in development projects.

NEMC Director General Immaculata Semesi led the Tanzanian delegation and thanked the World Bank for its continued support in environmental conservation initiatives.

A major focus of the meeting was the implementation of the Environmental Health Pollution Management Project (EHPMP), which seeks to control mercury use among small-scale miners.

NEMC said the project has achieved significant progress in strengthening chemical management systems and reducing the harmful impact of mercury in artisanal gold mining activities across Tanzania.

The World Bank delegation praised the achievements recorded under the project and reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with NEMC to sustain and expand the gains already achieved.

The meeting reflects growing cooperation between Tanzania and the World Bank in promoting environmentally sustainable development and improving institutional capacity in environmental governance.
