Tanzania to host Rio Ferdinand in high-profile sports development visit

Tanzania is expected to host former Manchester United and England national team defender Rio Ferdinand on May 19, 2026, in a special sports visit aimed at strengthening international cooperation in sports development, talent identification, and youth engagement.

The visit has been facilitated through an invitation extended by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda, who said the engagement forms part of broader efforts to position Tanzania as an active player in global sports networks while creating opportunities for young athletes.

Speaking in Arusha, Makonda said the government is working to expand international partnerships in sports by engaging global figures who can contribute to the development of infrastructure, training systems, and mentorship programs for young players.

He noted that he has maintained communication with several international sports personalities, including former England captain David Beckham, as part of efforts to strengthen Tanzania’s visibility in global sports circles.

According to Makonda, Rio Ferdinand’s visit will include tours of selected sports facilities and meetings with stakeholders in the sports sector.

The discussions are expected to focus on strategies for improving talent development systems and expanding opportunities for young people in football and other sporting disciplines.

He added that Ferdinand had previously mentioned being invited by Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, but expressed interest in visiting Tanzania once his schedule allows, reflecting growing international interest in the country’s sports sector.

Makonda further recalled that Tanzania has previously hosted international football figures, including Ivorian legend Didier Drogba, who visited and engaged with sports-related initiatives under the ministry in Dodoma.

The government says such high-profile visits are part of a wider strategy to promote sports diplomacy, attract investment into the sector, and inspire the next generation of athletes across the country.
