Preparations for the Commonwealth Games have intensified as Athletics Tanzania (AT) confirms that its national team is in good condition during an ongoing training camp in Arusha ahead of the Glasgow Games.

AT President Rogath Stephen Akhwari said he is satisfied with the progress of the eight athletes currently in camp, noting that they are in high spirits and responding well to training under the technical bench.

He said the team is being handled by head coach Anthony Mwingereza, assisted by Marcelina Gwandu.

The athletes in camp are Gabriel Geay, Mao Hando, Benjamin Rastim, John Naahay, Ambros Ama, Hamida Nassoro, Cecilina Panga, and Daniel Sindasinda.

Akhwari said the federation is now waiting for official confirmation from the government on the final number of athletes who will represent Tanzania at the Games.

“I was in Arusha where the team is camping. All the athletes are in good spirits. For now, we are just waiting for the government to confirm the number of athletes who will represent the country at the Games in Glasgow, Scotland,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the current preparation period is sufficient for the athletes to achieve strong performances at the international competition.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, with Tanzania expected to feature athletes from different sporting disciplines.

Tanzania has a long history in the Commonwealth Games, particularly in long-distance running and boxing. The country made its debut in 1962 and has continued to build its presence over the years.

At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Tanzania made a notable return to the podium, winning one silver and two bronze medals.

Long-distance runner Alphonce Felix Simbu secured the silver medal, while boxers Kassim Mbundwike and Yusufu Changalawe each claimed bronze medals.
