Transport disruptions in Kigamboni have intensified pressure on authorities after the collapse of Nguva Bridge, with residents of Somangila and Kimbiji continuing to endure difficult and costly journeys due to prolonged delays in repairs.
Kigamboni Member of Parliament Haran Sanga on Monday called on the Tanzania National Roads Agency to urgently speed up rehabilitation works, warning that the current pace is worsening the situation for wananchi who depend on the crossing for daily life and business.
During an unannounced inspection of the damaged bridge at Mwongozo, Sanga said the destruction—caused by heavy rains about a month ago—has severely disrupted movement between key areas including Gezaulole, Mwongozo and Kimbiji.
Accompanied by Kigamboni District Administrative Secretary Pendo Mahalu, who represented the District Commissioner, the MP said residents cannot continue bearing the burden of infrastructure delays when solutions are within reach.
He stressed that the bridge is not just a physical structure but a vital link supporting economic activities, access to health services, education and trade across the coastal wards.
In response, Dar es Salaam Regional Manager for Tanzania National Roads Agency, Lazeck Kyamba, said efforts are ongoing to restore the crossing as quickly as possible, while plans are also underway to construct a more resilient bridge that can withstand extreme weather conditions.
The collapse of Nguva Bridge has forced residents to use longer and in some cases unsafe alternative routes, increasing transport costs and affecting livelihoods. Traders, students and patients are among those hardest hit by the disruption.
As pressure mounts, attention now turns to how quickly Tanzania National Roads Agency will deliver on its commitment, with residents hoping for swift action to restore a critical lifeline in the rapidly growing Kigamboni district.
