A new electricity transmission and distribution project launched inside Mikumi National Park is expected to transform tourism operations, strengthen conservation activities and attract fresh investment into one of Tanzania’s leading wildlife destinations.
The project, inaugurated over the weekend by Musa Nassoro Kuji, connects the park to the national power grid through TANESCO, ending years of limited and costly energy access within parts of the protected area.
Officials said the reliable electricity supply will improve services for tourists, park workers and investors operating inside the park while also benefiting nearby communities where power lines pass through local villages.
Speaking during the launch, Kuji described the project as a major step in modernising operations inside the park and improving the quality of tourism services.
He said access to stable electricity would enhance conservation work, support the use of clean energy and create a more attractive environment for tourism investment.
Kuji credited the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving funds for the project and praised the TANAPA Board of Trustees for closely monitoring its implementation.
He also commended TANESCO for successfully delivering the project, saying it reflects the government’s wider commitment to expanding access to clean and reliable energy while accelerating development in communities surrounding protected areas.
The launch ceremony brought together park management officials, conservation officers and local residents led by Assistant Conservation Commissioner Augustine Masesa and TANESCO Southern Morogoro Manager Engineer Lugata Masingija.
The new power infrastructure is expected to reduce operational costs, improve accommodation and hospitality services inside the park and open new opportunities for investors interested in tourism facilities and related businesses.
Located along the busy Dar es Salaam-Morogoro highway, Mikumi National Park is among Tanzania’s most accessible wildlife parks and plays a key role in the country’s tourism industry.
