PM orders Permanent solution for Magole–Dumila bridge

Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has ordered the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to urgently find a permanent solution to the recurring flooding and sand accumulation at the Magole Bridge in Dumila, Kilosa District, warning that the situation continues to threaten a key transport route linking several parts of the country.

During an inspection tour of the bridge on Friday, Dr. Nchemba directed TANROADS officials and experts to develop a long-term strategy that will reduce the huge costs the Government incurs every year to clear sand deposits around the bridge.

The Prime Minister proposed a new approach that would allow local residents to participate in sand removal activities under professional supervision, saying the move could help lower Government expenditure while protecting the infrastructure.

“We cannot continue spending large amounts of money every year on the same challenge while there is an opportunity to involve wananchi in a proper and professional way,” Dr. Nchemba said.

The bridge, located on the Mkundi River in Morogoro Region, is a critical transport link connecting Kilosa and Gairo districts and serving motorists travelling between Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Dodoma and other upcountry regions.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima said the bridge has repeatedly faced the danger of being overwhelmed by sand carried by strong river currents, a situation that threatens its stability and the safety of road users.

According to Morogoro TANROADS Regional Manager Eng. Patrick Rambika, the Government spends between Sh400 million and Sh500 million annually to remove sand from the bridge area to ensure water flows freely and to prevent damage to the structure.

However, Rambika admitted that delays in funding sometimes worsen the challenge and increase risks to the bridge.

The Prime Minister’s visit attracted residents from nearby areas, where he also used the opportunity to highlight development achievements recorded under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration in sectors such as infrastructure, health, water and education.

Dr. Nchemba also urged wananchi in Gairo to continue safeguarding peace and unity, saying peace remains the foundation for development and economic progress.

“When peace exists, citizens are able to carry out their daily activities and improve their livelihoods. But when peace is lost, it is ordinary wananchi who suffer the most,” he said.

He stressed that peace and stability are essential for protecting lives, attracting investment and sustaining development projects across the country.
