The government has released over TZS 21 billion to local authorities across the country to repair road infrastructure damaged by ongoing heavy rains, in a move aimed at restoring transport services and easing movement for citizens and businesses.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, Dr. Festo Dugange, disclosed the funding in Parliament in Dodoma on May 6, 2026, while responding to a question from Bagamoyo Member of Parliament, Subira Khamis Mgalu.
The MP had sought clarification on the timeline for implementing the TACTIC project in Bagamoyo following the completion of its design phase.
Dr. Dugange said the ongoing rains have caused widespread damage in several regions, leaving some roads impassable and disrupting economic and social activities.
He noted that the government, through the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), has instructed regional and district managers to carry out immediate repairs to restore accessibility.
He added that while emergency interventions are underway, the government is also pushing forward with long-term infrastructure projects such as TACTIC, which will involve upgrading key roads to tarmac level and constructing a modern central bus terminal in Bagamoyo to support growing transport demand and investment.
“Experts have been directed to provide temporary solutions in affected areas to reduce the challenges facing citizens as they await permanent improvements,” said Dr. Dugange.
He further assured that the government will continue to closely monitor heavily affected areas and fast-track interventions to ensure transport services return to normal as soon as possible, while strengthening long-term strategies to protect road infrastructure from the impact of extreme weather.
