Government finalises nationwide mobilisation drive ahead of AFCON 2027

The government has completed preparations for a nationwide mobilisation strategy aimed at rallying citizens ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 (AFCON 2027), with the official launch expected in the coming days.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, is designed to ensure that Tanzanians actively participate in and benefit from the opportunities associated with the continental tournament, while strengthening the country’s global visibility.

Tabling the ministry’s budget estimates in Parliament in Dodoma on May 4, 2026, the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, said the government has already put in place a structured coordination framework to oversee preparations.

He said several high-level committees have been formed, including a National Steering Committee comprising ministers and permanent secretaries, chaired by Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, to ensure smooth implementation of all planned activities.

Makonda noted that the government has aligned key sectors to support the initiative, bringing together stakeholders from tourism, hospitality, transport including road, rail, air and marine services—as well as entertainment, particularly through the establishment of fan zones.

He added that parallel efforts are ongoing to upgrade urban infrastructure and improve the overall outlook of cities, while also enhancing tourism assets such as national parks and coastal attractions.

Investments are also being directed towards modern healthcare services and strengthening safety and security systems for both visitors and residents.

The minister further revealed that the government is working with internationally recognised sports figures to boost Tanzania’s profile ahead of the tournament.

Among them is global football icon Didier Drogba, whose engagement is part of a broader campaign to position Tanzania prominently on the international stage.

Makonda emphasised that AFCON 2027 presents a significant opportunity to accelerate economic growth, expand tourism, and promote social development.

He stressed that the success of the tournament will depend on collective national effort.

He also urged Tanzanians to take an active role in the lead-up activities, noting that unity, patriotism and coordinated preparation will be critical in ensuring the country fully capitalises on the benefits of hosting the prestigious continental event.
