The Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA), operating under the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, has issued a strong public notice reminding users of creative works, including media houses, digital platforms, and individuals, to fully comply with copyright laws before using any artistic or written content.
Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA) emphasized that it is legally mandated under the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, Chapter 218 (Revised Edition 2023), to protect and safeguard the rights of creators across various sectors, including music, journalism, literature, film, and other artistic productions.
In its notice, the institution warned that using copyrighted material without proper authorization is an offence under Tanzanian law.
It further stated that offenders may face penalties including a fine of up to 20 million Tanzanian shillings, imprisonment of up to four years, or both, depending on the decision of the court.
COSOTA noted with concern the increasing cases of misuse of creative works, particularly through media outlets and social media platforms.
The institution stressed that all users of protected content must obtain the required Copyright Clearance Certificate before using, sharing, or distributing any copyrighted material.
The authority also called on creators and users of artistic works to follow proper legal procedures, including licensing agreements and consultations with relevant authorities.
It explained that adherence to these procedures strengthens the protection of intellectual property rights and ensures that creators receive fair benefit from their work.
In addition, COSOTA urged members of the public to respect Tanzanian culture, customs, and laws when producing and consuming creative content.
It highlighted that compliance with copyright regulations is not only a legal obligation but also an important step in promoting the sustainable growth of the creative industry in the country.
For further information and guidance, COSOTA advised the public to reach out through its official communication channels, including telephone number 0738 015 014 or email barua@cosota.go.tz.
The notice was issued by Anitha Jonas, Acting Head of Public Relations and Communications at COSOTA.
