The opposition party, Chama cha Ukombozi wa Umma (CHAUMMA), has endorsed the findings of the commission led by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Othman Chande, saying the report reflects the real concerns and frustrations facing many Tanzanians.

Speaking at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, CHAUMMA Secretary General Salum Mwalimu said the commission that investigated incidents of violence before and after the October 29, 2025 General Election had carried out its work professionally and in line with the expectations of citizens.

Mwalimu said the party’s Central Committee was satisfied with the reasons outlined in the report as factors that contributed to the unrest witnessed during and after the elections.

He noted that the commission touched on several critical national issues, including the long-standing demand for a new constitution, the need for an independent electoral commission, youth unemployment, economic hardships, cases of abductions and disappearances, as well as weak accountability among leaders.

According to him, the concerns highlighted in the report are genuine and widely felt across the country.

“The commission spoke about a new constitution, an independent electoral commission, youth economic challenges, unemployment, abductions and disappearances, and poor accountability among leaders in serving citizens. These are real issues affecting Tanzanians and no one can deny that,” said Mwalimu.

He said CHAUMMA had chosen not to oppose the report, but instead focus on pushing the government to implement the recommendations and address the concerns raised by the commission.

Mwalimu also challenged opposition parties to rethink the tendency of opposing every government-led process, saying some reports should instead be used as opportunities to push for reforms.

“For more than 30 years, we have demanded a new constitution, and many commissions have already spoken about these issues. Sometimes as opposition parties we need to ask ourselves where we go wrong by opposing everything automatically,” he said.

He added that even critics of the Judge Chande report may eventually use it as an important reference point in future debates on governance, democracy and reforms in Tanzania.

The report by the commission chaired by Judge Chande was formed to investigate the causes of violence and unrest linked to the 2025 General Election and recommend measures aimed at strengthening peace, accountability and democratic governance in the country.
