Former President of Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde, has arrived in Tanzania for a three-day working visit expected to strengthen continental efforts on women’s leadership and inclusive development.
Ms Zewde, whose visit runs until April 22, is in the country to take part in the Steering Committee meeting of the African Women Leaders Network, a platform that promotes women’s participation in leadership and decision-making across Africa.
She joins former President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who arrived on April 19. Ms Sirleaf serves as the network’s patron and has been at the forefront of championing women’s leadership on the continent.
During the visit, the leaders are expected to hold talks with senior government officials, religious leaders, civil society organisations, political parties and women’s groups.
The engagements are aimed at encouraging greater inclusion of women in socio-economic and political processes, while advancing a shared agenda for sustainable development.
Officials said the meeting comes at a time when African countries are seeking to accelerate progress on gender equality and unlock the full potential of women as drivers of growth and transformation.
Ms Zewde was received upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa.
Tanzania continues to position itself as a key platform for regional dialogue, bringing together influential leaders to shape policies that promote inclusive growth and social progress across Africa.
