International water resources remain a critical driver of peace, cooperation, and sustainable development among nations that share them.

The Minister for Water of Tanzania, Jumaa Aweso (Mp), has officially opened the 13th Council of Ministers meeting of the Zambezi Watercourse Commission in Dar es Salaam.

In his opening address, Aweso, who is chairing the meeting, underscored the unifying nature of transboundary water resources, noting that “water has no boundaries” and serves as a foundation for collective progress among nations.

He emphasized that shared water bodies, particularly those crossing national borders, have significantly strengthened regional unity and cooperation.

Aweso further stressed the importance of investing in adequate water resource infrastructure and governance systems to support socio-economic development.

He highlighted the need for inclusive participation, calling on communities to play an active role in the conservation and sustainable management of water resources.

“Water is central to development and essential for improving livelihoods across multiple sectors of the economy,” he said, urging delegates to prioritize policies and strategies that enhance water security in the region.

The Zambezi Watercourse Commission is a regional body responsible for promoting the equitable and sustainable management of the Zambezi River Basin.

It impacts the lives of more than 51 million people and brings together eight member states: Tanzania, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.

The meeting is expected to strengthen collaboration among member countries and reinforce commitments toward sustainable water management for the benefit of present and future generations.
